“This is the shape of things to come” chimes Matt McManamon in the opening line of his solo return, setting a precedent for his 2021 plans.
The former Dead 60s frontman will release “Jumpin’ The Gun” via Fretsore Records on January 15th. The track is the first taste of his long-awaited debut album, also due in early ’21. Fans can expect a fusion of influences best described by the album’s title – ‘Scally Folk’.
“Jumpin’ The Gun” is a song for all ‘the haters’ in life. The song is primarily about experiencing negative people and negative thoughts, and responding to them by doing something positive. Some years ago when I took a hiatus from doing music, I’d find certain opinionated people, basically wrote me off, believing I was finished and would never do anything in music again. I always knew I would, I was just taking stock and biding my time and making sure I didn’t “jump the gun”, so the song draws inspiration from turning other people’s negativity into a positive. For me it has a real “we will win” attitude about it, not too dissimilar to the kids book The Tortoise and the Hare.”
The Dead 60s scored 5 UK top 40 hits, with their debut album surpassing 100k sales. During this time, McManamon and band toured with the likes of Morrissey, Kasabian, and label mates The Coral, appearing on stages from Glastonbury to Top of the Pops. Prior to launching his solo career, Matt also toured with The Specials as their live guitarist.
